Engraved title with minor ink dash, title with former owner's signatures Joannes Steuchig, (could be the Swedish archbishop Johannes Steuchius (1676-1742). D. Hildebrand 1772, first free endpaper with notes dated 1724, small part in upper margin cut off (old signature).
Crack in inner front hinge, spine with handwritten title, partly rubbed out, speckled edges.

Latin text by the German geographer Philipp Cluver (1580-1622) who was born in the Polish city of Gdansk (Danzig). He was librarian at the University of Leiden and spent much of his life advancing the science of geography. An extensive traveler he traveled to England, Scotland and France by foot. The Introductio which became a standard geographical text book was published numerous times between 1624 and 1729 with each successive editions becoming more and more elaborate. First published without maps the later editions included a much greater variety and number of maps.

Très rare atlas magnifiquement colorié à l'époque. C'est le premier atlas de Gerard Valk, éditeur, graveur et fabriquant de globes à Amsterdam. Ce dernier s'associa en 1673 à Petrus Schenck pour la publication de cartes. En 1683, ils acquérirent une partie du fond de Joan Blaeu, et fondèrent en 1700 leur propre compagnie. L'association entre les deux familles se poursuivra jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe siècle.
Nous n'avons pas localisé d'exemplaire de cet atlas à la date de 1706. Les exemplaires cités par Koeman et par Phillips ne sont pas datés. Koeman précise d'ailleurs que, selon les exemplaires, le nombre de cartes peut varier entre 25 et 100.

¤ Seutter’s Atlas Minor is a beautiful example of decorative German cartography from the mid-eighteenth century. Most of the maps have elaborately engraved cartouches showing religious or military scenes, depictions of the natural landscape, small inset maps and tiny town views. This is a particularly fine example, in full original color with a contemporary calf binding.

Tobias Conrad Lotter [1717-1777] was one of the most prolific German mapmakers of the 18th century. In 1740 he married the daughter of famed German cartographer, Mattheus Seutter, and in 1756 inherited his father-in-law’s business. He was succeeded by his son, Mathias Albrecht Lotter, who continued the business until the end of the 18th century. 27516

Interesting atlas printed during the French Revolution (1789–1799) by Ph. Dezauche. Most maps are prepared by Philippe Buache, who was one of the most active proponents of the so-called school of theoretical cartography active in mid-18th century France.
Interestingly the "Mappemonde" has the original dedication to the King removed as the map was created during the French Revolution. The Europe map is dated 1788 but the coats of arms in the title cartouche are covered with black ink.
The map is followed by a newly engraved map "Carte de France, suivant sa nouvelle division en LXXXVIV départements. . . 1794." The title cartouche shows a cock holding a swort and [bonnet rouge] or liberty cap [bonnet de la liberte].

With a privilege for the year 1792. It shows the latest discoveries - Australia and New Zealand are complete, Japan is more or less accurately depicted, and the routes of Captain Cook are shown. Title on ribbon extending across top of print, with face of the sun dramatically shining through dark clouds at upper centre.

This map is most notable for it's depiction of Mer de L'Ouest or Sea of the West, a great sea, easily the size of the Mediterranean, to flow from the then-known Strait of Juan de Fuca. He also shows an opening to the ocean from this great sea at roughly in North California or Oregon and Quivira somewhere in Idaho. Showing tracks of Tasman, Magellan, Drake, Quiros, etc. Only Australia's west coast is drawn in. 340x440mm.)

When Guillaume De Lisle died in 1726, Philippe Buache succeeded him and revised many of his maps. Buache died in 1773, and was succeeded by Dezauche.

This is the interesting ninth edition, with 26 full-page maps as called for in "Directions to the binder". The ninth edition was improved and considerably enlarged : to which is added a folding map of the world, (The world including the late discoveries with Captain Cooks voyages delineated) with a nice depiction of Australia, with van Diemens Land still joined to Australia's mainland. (140x245mm).

Each "Letter" (or chapter) is headed by an engraving followed by a further plate with just the principal cities listed (It was expected that the eager student would try and draw the outline of the country from memory).

This is the beautiful first four parts of Samuel Gustav Hermelins atlas of Sweden and Finland "Geografiske Kartor öfver Swerige". Each of the four title pages have spectacular landscape images or a view of Stockholm, engraved by Fredrik Akrel, a very skilled and productive engraver who later became director of Anders åkermans globe construction shop.
Hermelins atlas was the first comprehensive mapping of Sweden and Finland. An earlier attempt by "Kongl. Landtmäteri Contoiret" in the 18th century, did not manage to cover the entire country.
Samuel Gustav Hermelin launched his major cartographic undertaking as a private citizen. Unfortunately he suffered substantial economic loss. Due to economic difficulties the work, in its later stages, was continued by "Geographisk Inrättning", a private company before the government bought the plates, and the rights, to the work in the 1820s.
The atlas was published 1796-1818. The Finnish part of the atlas was produced a few years before Sweden lost Finland to Russia.

Hermelin (Samuel Gustaf, Baron) was a Swedish cartographer, mineralogist and patriot, born on 4 April 1744 and died in Stockholm on 4 March 1820. He made explorations (1782-1784) in Germany, France, in North America and the British Isles, and on his return he introduced his improvements in the exploitation of mines in Falun. He was quit successful and established factories, sawmills, settled in Norrbotten, brought dry marsh, he build roads and discovered the rich mines Gellivare. He prepare maps and published an "Atlas of Sweden and the Finland (1797-1807)", unfortunately the project failed and only 58 maps were published.

One of the most important aspects of the atlas is that it incorporated the new geo-political contours of Europe decided upon at the Congress of Vienna held at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Accordingly, the 12 maps of Italy and its various parts likewise reflect the new political order. Held between November, 1814 and June, 1815 and chaired by the Austrian statesman, C. W. von Metternich, the Congress sought to re-draw the map of Europe after the defeat of Napoleonic France in the previous year.
The resulting political changes for Italy were many, among them being the re-establishment of traditional monarchies in the kingdoms of Sardinia, Sicily and Naples; the rule of the Hapsburg princes being re-established in the duchies of Tuscany and Modena, the restoration and extension of papal authority in the Papal States, and a number of other changes.
Accompanying 36 text pages in the atlas explains the geo- political changes made in Italy and elsewhere.

The atlas also gives close attention to the mapping of North America and is quite up-to-date in this regard. In addition to a single-sheet map of North America, there is also a much more detailed four-sheet depiction of North America. One of the sheets has surprisingly good detail for the West, incorporating quite fully Lewis and Clark information. Another of the sheets has a well-detailed inset of the Northwest.
Vermiglioli, in his biographical dictionary of Perugian writers, described Bartolomeo Borghi (1750-1821) as “one of the greatest geographers of Europe.”
Early in his career, he was involved in the production of several cartographic works, both his own and those of others, that were primarily of local Italian interest. The present atlas, however, is considered “his most important work.”

¤ Rare first edition of Tanner's travel map in pocket map form, in it original red leather covers, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide.
The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text.
This interesting early map of the U.S. still shows the Five Civilized Tribes of the Indian Nation in their respective locations throughout the southeast. The western edge of the new country is sparsely populated, and the Oregon Territory begins just above Missouri.

¤ The oldest of these so-called Nagasaki pictures (Nagasaki-zu) were two panoramic prints by the artist Chikujuken that served as guides to the city of Nagasaki for visitors, who took them home as stylish souvenirs. They were such a useful guide for finding the foreign trading stations and the anchorage's of Dutch and Chinese vessels that they were continued for many years. The influence of this type of panorama print can be seen in the "Yokohama pictures" of the mid-nineteenth century and in the bird's-eye perspectives of such pictures as "A Comprehensive View of Yokosuka" that were still being published after the Meiji Restoration of 1868. ¤ Based on map by Ochikochi Doin. Oriented with north to the right. An impressive example of Edo cartography, giving details of daimyo residences, private properties, temples, shops, and fields of Tokyo. The present map is exceptionally detailed with accurate delineations of daimyo residences, temples, shops, private properties, fields, and much more. As is true with all maps of Edo from the Tokugawa period, the site of the Shogunal Castle (located in the center of the map) is left blank -- due in part to security concerns, although this feature clearly enhanced the Emperor's mystique. The large legend includes information on tides, pilgrimage routes, daimyo residences, star constellations, distances from Nihonbashi to various places in the City, lucky and unlucky days, and more. The first map to bear the above title was published by Suwara Jiemon in 1727; for obvious reasons, the map was revised regularly. ¤ A bird's eye view of Nagasaki harbour. This is the reversed edition by Baikö-dö, originally published by Köju-do (1802).
In nagasaki harbour the island Deshima (the V.O.C. trading post) with the Dutch flag and Dutch and Chinese vessels. Nagasaki was the port city of the Hizen Province (now Nagasaki Prefecture), and after 1570 began to prosper from the trade with Portugal. The government imposed a policy of seclusion on Japan in the early 17th century and since Nagasaki became the only port open to foreign trade. All the Dutch traders moved their commercial houses their in 1641.
The piece of fan shaped land that juts out into Nagasaki Bay, attached to the shore by a bridge is the island of Dejima. Constructed in 1634 and first home of the Portuguese, later the Dutch traders. The map shows much activity of the foreign ships. In the bay are anchored Dutch ships and Chinese Junks. One Dutch ship, undertow by lines of tugboats, is firing its cannons in greeting.

All through the Edo period, Nagasaki along with Kyoto, Osaka and Edo was the scene of a flourishing publishing business in woodblock prints. Maps of Nagasaki were first published in the 1670s and from the 1770s on they came out in a constant stream. 01196

¤ This map was used by Peter Schenk II (1698-1775) in his "Neuen Sächsischen Atlas". It is based on a map already created and 1732 and improved in 1734. The map shows the Saxon post-roads. In Schenk's Map of 1758 (approx. scale 1:475.000).

Couverture usagée, rabat détaché; infimes rousseurs. Exemplaire frais intérieurement. - 20 August 1838 the Austrian Lloyd inaugurated a line service from Trieste till the Mouth of Cattaro. In order to illustrate the route, the Company asked the Trieste painter Giuseppe Rieger to reproduce the landscapes and the ports of Istria and Dalmatia.
The results where lithographed in parts of approximately 25x17 cm, and glued one to each other to form a panoramic view of the journey. The view measures in total 10 meters.
The publication was first printed in 1853 and all further editions remained scarce as the publication was mainly distributed under the officials, the greater part for tourist promotion and therefore was distributed or sold to the hosts of the ship, like travel memory, that of it would justify the wide pulling.
The publication was made with great care of attention to detail and information for the passengers. On every design the place names with a distance indication in miles starting in Trieste.

This is the first edition with copper plates, the first Italian Plantin-edition of the first and most popular guide to and description of the Netherlands. The book is divided into sections, each devoted to a particular region. It really is a sophisticated traveller's guide, with emphasis on the topography of the various regions and the major cities, which are beautifully illustrated by engraved plans and views. But the book fully covers all aspects of contemporary life in each area as well, including extensive treatment of the fine arts, trade and the commercial concerns of each region.
Ludovico Guicciardini was a nobleman from Florence, who lived and worked in the Low Countries, and died at Antwerp in 1589.
The first edition, in Italian, was published at Antwerp in 1567, with the maps and plans in woodcut.
Plantin then published this first edition with all the maps and plans in copper engravings in 1581.
His present work was translated into French, Dutch, Latin, -and even into German and English all through the sixteenth and part of the 17th century, and all editions were in folio. The illustrations in the numerous editions vary greatly, and were often renewed or replaced.
The plans of Doornik and Kamerijk left blank, with note on these pages "Per causa della guerra no s'eancor potuto havare il ritratto di questa citta el naturale". Plantin ordered in 1581 entirely new plates, especially engraved for his editions mostly by the brothers Hogenberg, the famous engravers of Ortelius's atlas. Many new and updated city plans are included. The illustrations of this most important work were used by Braun and Hogenberg in their 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'.

Jan de Lat (1734-1750) was publisher of maps and atlases and a bookseller from Deventer, Holland. Associated with the engraver Jacob Keizer, Jan de Lat published miniature atlases. He worked at Deventer between 1734 and 1750 with the engraver Jacob Keyzer from Almelo as his associate. There is no biographical information about de Lat, but of Jacob Keyzer it is known that he came as a young man to Almelo from Amsterdam in 1706. 25723

Pietro Ruga was an engraver active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century, best known for his architectural subjects. Contained in original green card folder and slipcase.
The map shows the Strada Ferrata per Monza (opened 1840) and the Strada Ferrata Ferdinandea (1846) but no other railways. It extends from Bresso (N) to Quinto Sole (S) and Novegro (E) to Baggio (W). Scale is about one inch to 500 passi.

¤ Mapmaker, Captain Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819). Published by H. Friesman in 1787. This map first appeared in 1776, and was the first Russian map of the newly annexed Crimea. The map is clearly based on direct observation and includes a great deal of topographical detail.
Captain Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819) was a Dutch officer invited by Catherine II to serve in the Russian Navy. During her service from 1770-75, he fought the Turks, becoming known as the “Hero of the Black Sea” as a result of his important victory in 1773 against larger Turkish force.
During this war, Russia took the Crimea, and one of the duties of Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen as laid out by Peter the Great, founder of the Russian Navy, was making charts of the newly conquered land. This superlative map of Crimea is a work whose quality far exceeded the expectations of his mandate as Captain for the Russian Navy.

¤ Rare second edition of a lithographed wall map of the European part of the Russian empire, at a scale of about 1:3,200,000. With the title in a elaborately decorated lettering above left, an inset plan of St. Petersburg ("Grundriss von St. Petersburg gezeichnet von A. Roetsch 1835"), a key to the numbers 1-53 (main buildings) and a-c (main squares), a key to the symbols and colours, and two scales. Lithographed by H. Klöpfel.

The first edition appeared in 1835, and a third in 1844. It shows the roads and waterways in great detail, the smallest towns or villages shown have a population of less than 5000, and mountains are also indicated. Weiland was a very active cartographer for the Geographical Institute in Weimar, a leading German map firm that set quality standards through much of the nineteenth century. Coloured in outline as published to indicate the six regions noted in the key.
The colouring used for the border has browned it, and also offset to make two slightly browned patches in the map image. Otherwise a very good copy. An interesting and unusual map of the western part of the Russian empire.

Rééditée régulièrement et mise à jour jusqu’à la Révolution en fonction des listes annuelles des relais de la poste, elle est un précieux témoin de l’évolution du réseau routier aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.
Publiée en 1632 par l'éditeur d'estampes Melchior Tavernier et copiée peu après par un autre éditeur d’estampes, Nicolas Berey (1610?-1665), la première carte des routes de poste du royaume de France fut dressée par le géographe du roi Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667).
Nicolas Berey lui donna un caractère plus attractif en y faisant graver, dans les marges latérales, une série de vignettes représentant en plan, en profil ou en vue perspective, les dix principales villes du royaume.
