¤ Rare road map of Portugal in a scale of ca 1:470000. At the bottom right and left legends in Portuguese and French. Engraved by Romão Eloy de Almeida, who was a Portuguese printer and went to Brazil in 1808, where he printed the first banknotes of the Bank of Brazil. He worked at Impressao Régia (Royal Printing works) in Rio de Janeiro, where he stayed until the early 1820s.
The distances are marked in miles and hours.

The Grand Tour was the traditional travel of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s.
Essentially, the Grand Tour was a scholar's pilgrimage to Rome.

¤ Beautiful engraved plan of Rome with side borders depicting the 16 most important monuments and with a legend locating the major places and buildings.
The views are of both Roman ruins such as the Pantheon of Agrippa, Trajan's Column and the Colosseum (called here "Anfiteatro di Flavio"), and important city buildings such as St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, the Campidoglio and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The central map shows streets, plazas, significant buildings and landmarks, with a key in the lower left indicating some major monuments. A compass is drawn in the lower right. Beside it is a list of 14 neighborhoods of Rome, along with the map's publication information

Pietro Ruga was an engraver active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century, best known for his architectural subjects. He engraved a series of plans of Rome from 1812, and produced several updated versions into at least the 1820s. - Not in BLMC but c.f. BLMC Maps 10.b.3. for 1823 edition. Bénézit, E. ¤ Extremely rare large folding hand coloured lithographed map of Milan and its environs on 9 sheets, 11 of which each dissected into 12 sections of 14cm. sq. the central section with 9 sections and printyed lists of sites on either side, the sheets overlapping and duplicating each other by 3 or 4 sections each resulting in an overall map of 9x9 sections i.e. 81 sections measuring 126x126 cm. Contained in original green card folder and slipcase.
The map shows the Strada Ferrata per Monza (opened 1840) and the Strada Ferrata Ferdinandea (1846) but no other railways. It extends from Bresso (N) to Quinto Sole (S) and Novegro (E) to Baggio (W). Scale is about one inch to 500 passi.

¤ Rare second edition of a lithographed wall map of the European part of the Russian empire, at a scale of about 1:3,200,000. With the title in a elaborately decorated lettering above left, an inset plan of St. Petersburg ("Grundriss von St. Petersburg gezeichnet von A. Roetsch 1835"), a key to the numbers 1-53 (main buildings) and a-c (main squares), a key to the symbols and colours, and two scales. Lithographed by H. Klöpfel.

The first edition appeared in 1835, and a third in 1844. It shows the roads and waterways in great detail, the smallest towns or villages shown have a population of less than 5000, and mountains are also indicated. Weiland was a very active cartographer for the Geographical Institute in Weimar, a leading German map firm that set quality standards through much of the nineteenth century. Coloured in outline as published to indicate the six regions noted in the key.
The colouring used for the border has browned it, and also offset to make two slightly browned patches in the map image. Otherwise a very good copy. An interesting and unusual map of the western part of the Russian empire.

Very decorative title cartouche in the upper right-hand corner, with the address A Paris chez Nicolas Berey proche des Augustins .

L’une des premières cartes routières de France, vers 1640
Combinaison d’itinéraires rayonnant autour de quelques grands centres --- Paris, Lyon, Rouen, Toulouse, Bordeaux ---, la Carte générale de toutes les postes de France montre la configuration du réseau des services routiers mis à la disposition des courriers officiels et des voyageurs fortunés à la fin du règne du roi Louis XIII. Rééditée régulièrement et mise à jour jusqu’à la Révolution en fonction des listes annuelles des relais de la poste, elle est un précieux témoin de l’évolution du réseau routier aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.
Publiée en 1632 par l'éditeur d'estampes Melchior Tavernier et copiée peu après par un autre éditeur d’estampes, Nicolas Berey (1610?-1665), la première carte des routes de poste du royaume de France fut dressée par le géographe du roi Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667).
Nicolas Berey lui donna un caractère plus attractif en y faisant graver, dans les marges latérales, une série de vignettes représentant en plan, en profil ou en vue perspective, les dix principales villes du royaume. La bordure supérieure est ornée, en outre, d’une gravure représentant deux coches se dirigeant en toute hâte vers Paris. ¤
