Description
Whale and whaling scene, set against a mountainous landscape in the manner of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. Plate number 1. The engraving is copied after Adrian Collaert plate in "Piscium Vivæ Icones" a series first published in Antwerp by Adriaen Collaert after 1598, later published between 1627 and 1677 by Galle family. Several copies were made of this series.Most of the ships in the background were copied from a series of ten prints known as the Sailing Vessels, executed by Frans Huys after designs by Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

With decorative title cartouche upper left corner.This example is unusual in having the additional separately engraved decorative framework border around the map, the resultant visual effect being particularly striking. The frame border was prepared with a blank center so that the map could be over-printed on that area.These separately engraved border frames appear much more uncommon than the standard edition without border frames. Early color lithographed soil map by Julius Bien & Co. in New York for the Department of Agriculture. Legends at the side provide detail on soil type, etc. They also include interesting details of the cities, roads, railroads, rivers, and canals. A scale of 1" = 1 mile. The map gives great detail of the northern part of South Carolina, including Spatanburg and the area northwest of it, with Tiger River, South Pacolet River, and North Saluda River in the lower right-hand corner, in 1903.
