Description
On either side columns depicting the manner of dress in the major countries of Europe, surmounted by nine city views and plans.For European mapmakers their own continent contained few mysteries or secrets by the seventeenth century. However, the mythical island of Frisland still appears between Iceland and Greenland. The map is decorated with ships and a sea monster on the sea, bears on northern Russia, and lions on North Africa.

In 1615, during one of John Smith’s voyages across the Atlantic, he was caught by some French pirates. While at sea in captivity he was forced to suffer great hardships but, one night during a storm in the Bay of Biscay when the crew were forced below deck, he managed to escape in a rowing boat. A well engraved and highly detailed chart of French Guiana and the island of Cayenne. Made in 1763 by Jacques Bellin (1703-72), a prolific cartographer assigned the Ministry of the French Navy. It shows soundings, anchorage's, channels, shoals, navigational sightings. Engraved by Croisey, engraver for the Depot Générale de la marine is noted as such on the map.
