Description
Since its appearance as an Appendix in 1630, the atlas launched by
Willem Blaeu and continued by his son Joan had expanded greatly. But
despite many new regional maps the world map remained unchanged. For
some reason, Joan Blaeu's important wall map of 1648 was not immediately
adapted by his firm for atlas use.
The New
World map prepared by Joan Blaeu for his eleven-volume 'Atlas Maior' in
1662 is, unlike its predecessor, in two hemispheres. Outside the twin
hemispheres at the top are celestial figures seated amid clouds: below
are representations of the four seasons, with each allegorical figure
seated in an appropriate chariot quaintly drawn by pairs of beasts and
birds. As with all productions by the firm of Blaeu, the engraving and
layout and elegance of decoration are all of the highest standards.
Brabantia Ducatus.
A very decorative map by Willem Blaeu with west is at the top. On the lower left a magnificent cartouche with a sitting female figure carrying a globe and compasses and the coat of arms of Brabant. The map encloses the area between the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt, with Namur (Namen) as the most southern town.

Soil map - South Carolina Campobello Sheet.
Early color lithographed soil map by Julius Bien & Co. in New York for the Department of Agriculture. Legends at the side provide detail on soil type, etc. They also include interesting details of the cities, roads, railroads, rivers, and canals. A scale of 1" = 1 mile. The map gives great detail of the northern part of South Carolina, including Spatanburg and the area northwest of it, with Tiger River, South Pacolet River, and North Saluda River in the lower right-hand corner, in 1903.
