Description
Two engravings. [421b] When the natives of those parts, they were bathed in a cold stream, then chased round a blazing fire until they had dried out. Then they were put to bed and great care was taken to ensure their loins were dry. Vomiting was overcome by fasting for three or four days and paying careful attention to diet., which rarely included meat, except for human flesh, of which they were inordinately fond.In fact they would even fatten their enemy captives before eating them and seemed surprised Christians sometimes offered clemency to their enemies.
[421c] During Ojeda’s voyage to South America, they came to a village built above the water in a lake. It comprised about 20 huts, like bells built on poles above the water, with bridges linking them.
They reminded Vespucci, who was on this voyage, of the buildings in Venice (hence the name given to the country - Venezuela). When the natives saw the visitors, they destroyed the bridges between their huts but later paddled out in their canoes with some of their young women, whom they pretended to offer to the visitors.
But when some of the older women began screaming from their huts, the young women jumped into the water and swam away and the natives started shooting arrows at the visitors, which they had hidden below the waterline
In 1631 Johann Ludwig Gottfried, inherited the Theodor De Bry’s publishing firm, among the illustrated accounts of the expeditions of Magellan, Columbus, Vespucci, Cortes, Balboa, Raleigh, Drake, Smith, and many others.
Gottfried issued together with Matthaeus Merian a one-volume condensation "Newe Welt Vnd Americanische Historien/ Jnhaltende Warhafftige vnd volkommene Beschreibungen Aller West-Jndianischen Landschafften..." that used many of the original copper plates and supplemented them with new ones of more recent voyages. The book was published by Matthaeus Merian. The work was reprinted in 1655 / 1657.
