Description
An inset plan of Batavia and clearly indicated rice fields, mountains, forests, towns in profile, and even elephants, suggesting the wealth of detail found on this map. Modeled on Hadrien Reland's important Dutch map of a few years earlier, the superb topographical detail is complemented by drapery style cartouche and side panels which provide a full French text description of the island, its topography, history, flora, fauna and inhabitants.
Above the map are two drapery style title banners written by Gueudeville, that present the history of the island as well as the presence of the Dutch. Additional text on either side of the map refer to various cities and villages of Java.
One of the finest large-scale maps of Java, giving good information regarding the V.O.C. settlements, each indicated with a flag in national 3-color.

Scarce print with German text sheet showing the Dutch attack on Praia.On 27th June 1589, Simon de Cordes left Holland with five ships, bound for the Magellan Straits. On reaching Santiago - one of the Cape Verde Islands, they decided to loot the fortress at Praia. This stood on top of a high rock whose only approach was by a narrow stairway with 175 steps. A highly decorative and beautiful print with 139 flags of the sea-faring nations, factions, and trading companies. Among the more interesting flags are those of the Dutch West India Company (G.WC. /Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie) and the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C. / Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie). This plate is probably derived from a Dutch flag print issued by Cornelis Danckerts c. 1700.
