Description
A very nice depiction of Chateau Chenonceaux near Tours, France within the foreground is a dead lion, surrounded by rabbits. With a verse in two languages underneath the picture.
By 1625 the collection included 362 which had increased to 800 by the end of the century when the last edition was published.
Among the master engravers that contributed to this series, usually working from earlier sources, were Matthäus Merian, Sebastian Furck, Christian Stimmer and Meisner himself.
Each engraving is distinguished by a motto (usually in Latin) above the image and emblematic verses (usually in Latin and German) beneath. These mottos and verses are intended to relate to the history or culture of the city depicted, although the connection can be somewhat cryptic. It is interesting to note that topographical and other details in these engravings are often more precise than many engravings of the era made on plates several times this size.

Fine map prepared by G.d'Isle depicting North and south America, the west coast taken north to Cap Mendocin and Cap Blanc with a note Entrée decouverte par Martin d'Aguilar .The re-engraved Amsterdam edition, with the lettering within the title cartouche copied from the issue of the first edition with the florid lettering for d'Amerique. Dated 1739.

Dimension of 24.5 x 38cm. The originals were donated by an American patron to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and constitute a set of 200 plates. Good condition.

Uncommon miniature map of France, engraved by J.Spilbury for "A New General and Universal Atlas Containing Forty five Maps by Andrew Dury".This miniature atlas published during the Seven Years' War.The maps are typical for the period and well executed with great clarity. The plates are engraved in 1761 and in 1763 a second edition was presumably produced for the French market having all but nine with a French titles added above the top.
