Fine lithographed map of the town of Patterson. From : "Atlas of New York and vicinity" published by Beers, Ellis & Soule, 95 Maiden Lane, New York.The map provides the names of specific homeowners, as well as information about the occupations and physical locations of the various tradesmen in each village from Beer's famous county atlas "Atlas of New York and vicinity," "a documentary record of nineteenth-century life and delightful specimens of American folk art."
F. W. Beers, along with other members of his family, were among the leading county atlas publishers in the period immediately following the Civil War. Their atlases provide "a detailed cartographical, biographical, and pictorial record of a large segment of rural America in the Victorian age" (Ristow).
Beers first published his Atlas of New York & Vicinity in 1867. McCorkle and others have observed that various issues of the atlas were published in that year and the following with significant differences in the number and selection of maps included by the publisher. This was the result of clever marketing by Beers, intending to sell the atlases to customers in specific regions.

Map of Bretagne in France. From early on Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed of publishing an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630, he had published at least 17 folio size maps. Blaeu was able to realize his plan soon after he had acquired the copper plates of the atlas maps by Jodocus Hondius. The "Appendix followed in 1630.In 1635 he finally realized a "international edition" of a world atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum".

A very nice view of St. Victor church in Paris. In the foreground, a night watchman is depicted. With a verse in Latin and German underneath the picture. The German text reads : "Auff dass nicht mög der Wandersman, Sein Füss verletzen uff dem plan, von dem Fusseisen so merct mich, er muss wandern fursichtiglich."

Early map of Eastern France and part of Switzerland. Geneva in upper right corner. With Latin text on verso. Engraved by Petrus Kaerius. Shortly after the publication of big folio-atlases the need was apparently felt for a smaller sized atlas, one that would be handier and, above all, cheaper. Joh. Cloppenburgh published in 1630 a atlas based on Mercator's pocket map, but in a slightly larger size. He published a Latin text edition in 1632.
