Description
The so-called Kruquius map is a wall-map of the Delfland water board district. The map consists of 25 engraved map sheets. Several maps flanked by fine large armorial cartouches. All sheets together cover a wall map with a total area of 230 x 280 cm. The map was often bound in a rich gilted calf binding and presented as gifts to important persons. The atlas than included also the overview map.According to Prof. Koeman "Thanks to the quality of the cartography (a “sensitive” scale of 1:10,000 was used) rather than its size, the map surpasses all other water authority maps which were produced in the 17th and 18th centuries".

Scarce map of France prepared after J.B.Nolin and published by Mondhare for his Atlas Général a l'usage des colleges et maisons d'education.. Lower right inset map of Corsica. In left and right margins key references to Départements and Provinces. Louis Joseph Mondhare was active in Paris and published several smaller atlases and re-published the wall maps of Nolin.

The first edition was included in " l'Atlas nouveau" of E. Mentelle. The second state (after 1792) has the text "Plan routier de la ville de Paris…", in the righthand lettered key, added.

Prepared by Jacob Surhon who made a manuscript map of Artois for which he received 36 Livres from Charles V in 1554. For security reasons the map was not published. Only in 1579, when Antwerp was independent for a short time, Ortelius used the map for publication in his atlas.This is the last and very rare state with the signature of Theodorus Galle.
