Description
A reduced version of Clement de Jonghe (1650) plan of Jakarta from 1650. The town plan has a vignette at the bottom showing Jakarta from the sea with the volcanoes Mount Gede, Mount Pangrnago and Mount Salak in the background.Engraved for Arnoldus Montanus "Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische maatschappy in ’t Vereenigde Nederland. . ." (1669) but reissued by Pieter van der AA.
Batavia, present-day Jakarta, the Dutch center of trading activities in the East Indies. European and native ships are shown in the sea, while the Dutch lion stands proudly above the schematically planned city.
Brabantia.
A lovely miniature map of the Duchy of Brabant, published by Petrus Bertius, in Amsterdam at the beginning of the seventeenth century. There is a nice, small strap-work title, a little stippled sea, and the map depicts local topography and towns including Mechelen, Breda, Cleve, Maestricht, Cologne, Brussels and Namur. Early color lithographed soil map by Julius Bien & Co. in New York for the Department of Agriculture. Legends at the side provide detail on soil type, etc. They also include interesting details of the cities, roads, railroads, rivers, and canals. A scale of 1" = 1 mile. The map gives great detail of the northern part of South Carolina, including Spatanburg and the area northwest of it, with Tiger River, South Pacolet River, and North Saluda River in the lower right-hand corner, in 1903.
