Description
Fine lithographed map of the town of New Castle. The map provides the names of specific homeowners, as well as information about the occupations and physical locations of the various tradesmen in each village from Beer's famous county atlas "Atlas of New York and vicinity, a documentary record of nineteenth-century life and delightful specimens of American folk art."F. W. Beers, along with other members of his family, were among the leading county atlas publishers in the period immediately following the Civil War. Their atlases provide "a detailed cartographical, biographical, and pictorial record of a large segment of rural America in the Victorian age" (Ristow).
Beers first published his Atlas of New York & Vicinity in 1867. McCorkle and others have observed that various issues of the atlas were published in that year and the following with significant differences in the number and selection of maps included by the publisher. This was the result of clever marketing by Beers, intending to sell the atlases to customers in specific regions.

[514] On 29th May, 1615, Spilbergen’s fleet anchored further north, off an island called Santa María that was separated by a narrow stretch of water (A), from Punta Lavapié on the mainland. Four of the ships (I) anchored in the bay, while the fifth (H) anchored closer. The Dutch went ashore in small boats (F), where they saw Spanish soldiers on horseback (B), so they arranged themselves for battle (C). An original early 17th century copper engraved miniature antique map of the eastern Dutch region of Overijssel by Petrus Bertius. The title is displayed in a simple strapwork cartouche with the further title in bold letters above the map. Prince Maurits' sailing carriages had been designed by Simon Stevin. The Prince, always accessible to new inventions of his old instructor, could not please the foreign ambassadors more than by inviting them for a ride in his carriage. The big sailing-carriage could seat 28 persons and could reach a speed of seven miles per hour.
