Fine lithographed map of the town of Carmel. From : "Atlas of New York and vicinity" published by Beers, Ellis & Soule, 95 Maiden Lane, New York. The map provides the names of specific homeowners, as well as information about the occupations and physical locations of the various tradesmen in each village from Beer's famous county atlas "Atlas of New York and vicinity," "a documentary record of nineteenth-century life and delightful specimens of American folk art."F. W. Beers, along with other members of his family, were among the leading county atlas publishers in the period immediately following the Civil War. Their atlases provide "a detailed cartographical, biographical, and pictorial record of a large segment of rural America in the Victorian age" (Ristow).
Beers first published his Atlas of New York & Vicinity in 1867. McCorkle and others have observed that various issues of the atlas were published in that year and the following with significant differences in the number and selection of maps included by the publisher. This was the result of clever marketing by Beers, intending to sell the atlases to customers in specific regions.
Americae Nova Tabula.
An inset shows Greenland and Iceland. Decorative elements include ships, sea monsters, and vignettes of native Americans within South America. In addition, the map is bordered by a series of nine maps and birds-eye views at the top (including Cusco, Havana, and Mexico City) and ten ethnographic views of various Native Americans.The delineation of the coast and the nomenclature on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts are basically Spanish in origin and follow the maps of Ortelius and Wytfliet. The map perpetuates various myths including the Parime Lago , although it is generally more accurate than its predecessors. Orientated with west to the top. Including the mouth of the Amazon.

Early map centered north of Paris. With Latin text on verso. Engraved by Petrus Kaerius. Shortly after the publication of big folio-atlases the need was apparently felt for a smaller sized atlas, one that would be handier and, above all, cheaper. Joh. Cloppenburgh published in 1630 a atlas based on Mercator's pocket map, but in a slightly larger size. He published a Latin text edition in 1632.
